Forget the war on talent. Here's what you need to know.

Recruitment and retention challenges are widely documented.

Over the last few years we've seen historically low unemployment, closed borders amplifying the skills shortage and the tightest labour market in Australian history.

Things changed a little in 2024, but competition for talent is not going away.

Here are the latest Australian workforce stats

  • Average employee turnover is 16%.

  • 1 in 3 employers report turnover of 20% or above.

  • 4 in 10 employers faced recruitment difficulties throughout 2024.

  • 43% of Australian workers are considering leaving their jobs in 2025.

  • Average tenure in Australia is less than HALF of what it was a decade ago.

People are still on the move. But there is no war on talent.

There has been a shift in the role work plays in our lives. What people expect from a job and employer has changed. This isn't a trend. This is the new normal.

We’re in the era of talent.

People want work, to work for them.

Understanding this is the key to getting better at the business-critical work of talent attraction and retention.

When you need to hire, you're the seller (not the buyer).

The consumer is the person you're trying to attract (and keep). You job is to create a connection, inspire action and motivate people to choose you.

Forget talent acquisition. Recruitment is marketing.

If this mindset resonates, you're on the right path.
